      I wonder whether John Lawrence Featherstone's illegitimate origins have anything to do with the silence. Ah, I've just found some notes from years ago, made after a conversation with Mum, in which she said that John Lawrence started his own nursery in Putney, and his son John became Chief Postmaster at Wimbledon.

We have examples from the Birth, Marriage and Death indexes where people were registered at birth with the final 'e' missing and were married with the final 'e' in the surname.
