    • George and Jane Penrose may have followed a number of gypsy practices.George and Jane were both brought down into poverty by the loss of a spouse and having to care for a family as well as numerous other hardships. For instance, in 1850 George's personal possessions were valued at $0; 1860 $60 and 1870 back to $0. Jane bought the house 2 lots in Eagle Village, IN in the mid 1870s presumably with funds from her brothers or father or other family.     • He was the son of Abraham Penrose and Jane Matheny. His parents divorced when he was 9 years old. He grew up in Belmont Co., Ohio. By the mid-1840s he was living in Holmes Co. where he married Drusilla Tilton on June 14, 1846. In 1850 the family was living in Sunbury Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio. Around 1853 the family migrated to Indianapolis. After the death of Drusilla around 1865, George married second to Eliza Jane (Featherston) Green on Sept. 11, 1866. In the mid-1870s they moved to Eagle Village.

      By trade he was a farm laborer and also worked as a brakeman on the railroad. He also did other general labor in Indianapolis between about 1853 and 1875. Indianapolis City Directories and the Census show the following residences: 1857 - Penrose, George, resi. cor. Dun. & Ala. sts. Duncan St. and Alabama St.; Duncan was later renamed Henry St. and is on the near south side in the Wholesale District and is by the Lilly Corporate Center. 1858-59 - Penrose, Geo., brakeman Peru R.R., res. 191 E. Washington; it is in the Wholesale District 1860 - resided in (northern) Perry Twp., Marion Co.; this is also on the south side somewhere south of Troy Ave. 1865 - Penrose, George, laborer, res. 826 W. Washington; this is near the White River and the Indianapolis Zoo 1870 - resided at Woodbank, Washington Twp., Marion Co.

      The Penrose name originates from Cornwall, England and the Penroses were originally Cornish. His ancestors on his father's side were Cornish and English; his mother's ancestors were English, Norman, French and Scotch. The Penroses were Quakers and left Yorkshire, England due to persecution. They located in Co. Wicklow, Ireland in the 1600s and left for Pennsylvania around 1717. Later, they migrated to Winchester in northern Virginia and then Monongalia Co., West Virginia where they lived for about 12 to 15 years before migrating to Ohio.

      George was the father of 9 children. Four by Drusilla: Margaret, Clarissa 'Clara' T. (Penrose) Heim, Friend N. and George. Five by Jane: Silver, Eliza Caturah, William S., Sanford Ammoniah and Russia Mayme. George is buried in an unmarked grave which is marked with field stones. This grave is in the very rear part of the cemetery. It may be marked with a large blue-grey rock which is about 15 feet southwest of Max Penrose's grave or it is very near this location. This section of the cemetery is overgrown and needs cleared as there are graves there.
