The entry of marriage at Stoke-Damerel parish church I have states :- John Down of this parish, labourer and Mary Passmore, spinster, were married in this church by banns with Consent of ____________this Nineteenth Day of July in the Year one Thousand eight Hundred and Thirty Six by me 'illegible' Rector............In the Presence of Samuel Down and George Nettle
Note:- The fact that noboby was required to give consent must have meant that they were both over 21. Alan Pocock alanpocock423@btinternet.com
Research at the Family History Centre has shown that between July 1837 (Thomas Samuel's birth) and August 1859 (Thomas Samuel's marriage) there were 97 John Down deaths, 44 of which were in Devon and 14 of which were in Tavistock. There were only two after 1851 (one 1st qtr 1857 and another 3rd qtr 1858) so hopefully they should appear on the 1851 Census. If we imagine a scenario where both parents had died and this motivated Thomas Samuel to walk to London and start a new life, it might have been one of these two (or an earlier one), bearing in mind that he married Martha Gamble in South Kennington in 1859. All we really know is that he must have been one of the 97!! Alan alanpocock423@btinternet.com

Hi Mark, Remember the other week that I said that I had sent for the birth certificate of a Grace Down. It arrived this morning. Grace was the daughter of John and Mary Down nee Passmore. A search of the 1851 census gives us Grace (7 years old) and a George [two years younger] in the Tavistock Workhouse. IF this is your great aunt Grace, then ergo her mother and father must have died, or abandoned them. There are many entries in the burial indexes for both a John and Mary Down, who may be your John and Mary. So difficult to tell without knowing when the year a person was born.
But Hey, who says we do not know?
The parish registers of Dolton Devon show that a John Howe Down was born and baptised "the son of William Down and Sarah Down (nee Howe) of Halsdon, Farmer 9 January 1815" at Dolton parish church.
Interesting therefore to learn that in the Egg Buckland parish register the following was noted " Grace daughter of John Howe and Mary Down of Egg Buckland labourer 7 August 1842" Proof, when placed alongside the birth certificate received today that the birth in 1815 was of the man baptising his daughter Grace in August 1842, who just happened to be the father of your Thomas Samuel, or Samuel Thomas christened in 1837. So I reckon we are a generation further back, looking for a William Down born about 1785 to 1790, and the birth of Sarah Howe, a year or two later. Trouble is they do not seem to have lived until the 1851 census, so we do not know the parish of their birth, and there is not much on the IGI. But we can keep thinking things through and checking. Greetings from Australia! Dear Family,
I believe I may have gone back another 2 generations on this Down Family.
I have a print out of John Down's Baptism and birth dates from Plymouth and West Devon Records office.
John Down was born on the 29th December 1811 and was baptised on the 2nd February 1812. It also states his parents as Richard and Ann Down, however it does not mention her maiden name. I looked at the marriages around that time and found a Richard Down marrying Ann Julian on the 15th March 1803 at St Thomas Church, Exeter. Julian being her surname.
I also found a Richard Down whose parents were John Down and Grace.
There was an Ann Julian baptised on the 17th August 1777, her parents were John and Ann Julian registered at Plymouth Devon.
I have also found other children born to Richard Down and Ann Julian.
They are as follows: Richard born 17 January 1806
Susanah born 12 September 1807
Ann born 1810
Joanna born 1814
James born 1816
I was wondering if someone could please confirm for me, that I have the right person married to Richard.
It is the only one that I thought could be correct.
Trusting all are keeping well, and that you each enjoy a great Christmas with your family.
Regards, Kevin
